Prometheus (2012) — Immortality pitch meeting that lasts seconds. Peter Weyland rises from cryo to meet his maker; David translates; the Engineer listens—and answers with violence that voids every corporate talking point.
Weyland on the bridge
For much of the expedition, Weyland is rumor and hologram—Vickers’s secret, the mission’s true wallet. Shaw discovers the old man in cryo aboard the Prometheus, then again in the pyramid as a frail body wheeled toward the awakened Engineer. Guy Pearce under old-age prosthetics plays hubris as entitlement: he paid for the trip, so creators must grant favors.
The reveal rewrites earlier scenes. David’s curiosity, Vickers’s control, the med-pod’s presence—all were staging for this audience. Science fiction becomes courtroom drama with worse jurisprudence.
Translation as performance
David speaks to the Engineer in linguistic tones the film does not subtitle for us—service as theater, android as diplomat. Michael Fassbender plays the moment calm, almost tender, as if language could bridge species and sin. Weyland whispers demands: extend my life, confirm my importance.
David’s role here completes his arc from observer to intermediary. He is Weyland’s son in function if not flesh, and he delivers the CEO to judgment. David android explained tracks the android’s loyalties shifting mid-scene.
The answer on screen
The Engineer listens. Pauses. Then rips David’s head off, strikes Weyland with it, and resumes launch prep as if swatting insects. No exposition explains motive—contempt, fear, guilt, or policy all fit. Scott chooses visceral punctuation over dialogue receipt.

Prometheus punished
The scene is the film’s title argument in miniature: steal fire, expect flame. Weyland is Prometheus as CEO—seeking forbidden longevity, bringing torch-bearers who bleed. Engineers seed worlds and stockpile weapons; neither job description includes nursing dying billionaires.
Deleted and extended materials add alternate beats, but theatrical cut keeps the beat brutal and fast. One alternate had more Engineer dialogue; Scott cut toward violence because creators who explain themselves rarely need to rip heads off with their own androids.
Pearce’s old-age makeup polarized viewers, yet it works dramatically here: Weyland arrives as corpse-in-waiting, demanding eternity from beings who already mastered disintegration. Prometheus deleted scenes notes variants without softening the insult.

Rewatch David’s face before decapitation—curiosity, not surprise. He may not know the exact outcome, but he treats the meeting as experiment. That read sets up his later god-complex in Covenant.
The silence before violence is the scene’s cruelest beat: Weyland finally meets his maker and gets no sermon, only execution. Immortality pitches die in seconds when gods do not share your quarterly goals.
